Alan Streets
AKA (Alan Russell-Cowan) is an artist with a most interesting history. Born of middle class parents in 1969 in the leafy suburbs of London he attended Epsom College public school and managed to obtain a place at the Londons prestigious St Martins School of Art. He was however, not without a history of rebellion which led to drug and alcohol abuse and a rejection of main stream society. He dropped out of college and at the tender age of just 19 he made an amazingly brave decision to leave for New York on his own where he became a Plein Air artist painting on the streets of Manhattan.
Over the 10 years Alan lived in New York he was to obtain something of a celebrity status and became well known to art galleries and even art museum curators. While there he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and continued to work while being treated. He was eventually approached by a film company who were fascinated by his story and he became the subject of an award winning documentary My Name Is Alan and I Paint Pictures, which covers six years of his life and focuses on the relationship between his diagnosis as a paranoid schizophrenic and his struggle to find success in the art world.
The documentary examines Alans life, the role art and painting play in it, and how mental illness intertwines with artistic creation and perception. It won Best Documentary at the Monaco Film Festival in 2007 and won the Founders Choice Award for Best Documentary at the New York Independent Film Festival in the same year. He is now based back in the UK and has been accepted as a new artist by Buckingham Fine Art who are one of the countrys best known art distributors. The companys Managing Director Ray Loud says of Alan, Our job is to find good art and investable artists for our customers across the UK. We are not philanthropists. Alans art caught my eye and there is something special here I have no doubt. His illness seems to have given him a unique vision that both interests and amazes me. His cityscapes are truly stunning and we look forward to a great future together. Having seen the documentary I was naturally somewhat sceptical about how Alan would be at our first meeting but I neednt have worried, he is a really intelligent, charming and sensitive man. Is his art a good investment? Well, you make your own mind up, I already have and will be putting my money where my mouth is we have something special here - mark my words.
